Faith at the Grammys

t last week’s Grammy awards a lot of people thanked God when they accepted their cherished musical award.I’ll admit, I’m always a bit miffed when some of the rapperswho win write lyrics that can be really violent and misogynistic but still thank “god” for their Grammy. That’s my narrow minded opinion and so help me god, I’ll bust a cap on any mofo beeyatch that disagrees, fo shizzle. See what I mean? Didn’t that feel just a bit incongruent coming from a man who professes to follow Christ? Or was it incongruent just because it came from a 57 year old white guy?

I know it’s not my place to judge the sincerity of anyone’s faith at the Grammys even when it seems incongruent to me. But I can tell you a story of faith at the Grammys that is beautifully congruent.

My cousin, Dave Kierznowski, has an incredibly successful company that allows him to be involved in his real passion, the integration of the arts and faith, in particular with music. A couple years ago, as an expression of his faith in God and support of new artists, he started up a music production company with his good friend Charlie Peacock, a Nashville producer. The first album their company recorded and produced was The Civil Wars, "Barton Hallows" which won two Grammys on Sunday: Best Country Duo/group Peformance and Best Folk Album.

Pretty cool, huh? Faith moves people to do more than say “Thank you God” on auspicious occasions. Faith moves people to ask, “What could be better? What can I help add to the world that isn’t here right now? Who can I serve and support”. I’m inspired by my cousin’s faith and with that I will bow and say “I just want to thank God and…

Nothing but love,

Mark

“All manner of people who were not acceptable by the religious standards of the first century found the wide embrace of God in Jesus Christ. Since God doesn’t pick and choose who will be invited into full participation of the church and faith community, neither should we. If it can include me, I don’t see how it could exclude anyone.”
